Neilsen Gough

Neilsen Gough is a young Australian jazz trumpeter/singer with a bright future. Not only is he a gifted musician but as a live performer he has the ability to create a rapport with his audience through his laid back, easy stage persona.

His style of jazz is similar to that of American west coast legend Chet Baker - laid back, ‘lazy’ vocals and vibrant energetic trumpet playing. His use of dynamics is excellent - sometimes playing so softly you could hear a pin drop.

There is a lovely feeling of space in Neilsen Gough’s music. Nothing is rushed and the music is allowed to flow at it’s own pace with trumpet, bass, piano, drums, percussion and vocals all intertwining but never getting in each other’s way. Neilsen plays with an excellent band of musicians. I took a friend of mine, a classical pianist and Oxford music graduate, to see them play at the Basement and he could only sit there staring in open mouthed disbelief at some of Adam Ponting’s piano licks.

Neilsen Gough has released a debut album entitled Cool Jazz which was produced in Sydney and is available from Birdland, Anthem Records and Folkways. He can also be seen regularly playing live. For more information on his performance dates keep an eye on the programme listing section.
