The Sydney Symphony Orchestra
On the Move

The Sydney Symphony will take to the suburbs of Sydney in October for their annual Music on the Move metropolitan tour, giving performances in Sutherland, Parramatta and Liverpool. The Sydney Symphony will perform at Parramatta Riverside Theatres on Saturday 25 October at 8.00pm.

The Symphony’s Principal Oboe, Diana Doherty, will be guest soloist for performances of Mozart’s delightful Oboe Concerto (K.314). Other works on the program are Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 (Prague) and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World).

”Our annual metropolitan tour gives us a chance to perform for people who aren’t able to travel into the heart of the city for our concerts,” said Symphony Managing Director Mary Vallentine. ”Metropolitan touring is also an important part of our commitment to making the Sydney Symphony accessible to everyone in Sydney, no matter where they live,’ she said.

The performances will be conducted by the Sydney Symphony’s Co-Concertmaster, John Harding, in his role of Heinz Harant Associate Conductor. This important training position is new in 1997 and was endowed by Symphony Council member Eva Griffith in memory of her friend Heinz Harant, who was a devoted Symphony subscriber for over 50 years. In this role, John Harding has undertaken a significant number of conducting engagements with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra during the 1997 concert season, including conducting critically acclaimed performances in Tamworth, Armidale, Lismore and Mittagong.

Oboist Diana Doherty was born in Brisbane but has spent the past decade living and working in Europe. She was the first Australian and first oboist in 11 years to win the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Competition in New York in ] 995, and also won the International Lyceum Club Competition, the International Chamber Music Competition and the Prague Spring Festival Competition whilst resident in Europe.

Following the performance at Parramatta Riverside Theatres on Saturday 25 October the Sydney Symphony will move to the Liverpool Catholic Club on Sunday 26 October at 7pm.
